QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Walkways
1. During the installation of a walkway how thick should the stone dust base be?
Use 4" to 6" of stone dust. Be sure to compact it properly. If your soil has poor drainage or stability you can put gravel under the stone dust base.
2. Which paver is better, brick or concrete?
Concrete pavers are considered to be more durable and should hold up a lot better. Brick pavers are more prone to algae and moss.
3. What should I do if the area I want to add a walkway is steep in some sections? Making a walkway that is too steep can be very dangerous. Instead, consider adding steps to those parts. Not only will steps be safer on those inclines, but they will also add another interesting design element to your landscape.
4. How wide should my walkway be? The rule of thumb is that your walkway should be wide enough for 2 people to walk side by side on it, roughly 42 inches across.
5. What is the best way to plan a walkway that leads to a door? Walkways that lead to entrances should follow a logical route to the door. They should be inviting and simple rather than winding in directions that make the path longer than necessary.
